CALL FOR LOCAL PHOTOS: Beautiful Bouchie - Milburn

Here at the Bouchie Lake Country Store... we LOVE everything there is about LOCAL!  When we opened the store in February, 2015, one of our goals was for the store to be a hub for the community -  a meeting place where neighbours could meet and get to know one another.

We LOVE when folks pop in for a cup of Billie's coffee at the Darlings' Coffee Bar, sit down and read a book, play a game, or work on a puzzle, a handicraft, or the Community Cork Board.  This is why we have a wee spot called the COMMUNITY CORNER which is still being set up.  It includes a Lending Library, a large table for puzzles, a coffee machine, and soon a table.

To make it homier and nice, we are hoping to collect some LOCAL photos which we can have enlarged and put on display in  the Community Corner.  If you have a photo or 2 of life in Bouchie - Milburn we hope you will share them with us.  They can be of anything that showcases our community and could have been taken in any season... here are a few ideas...

* Horseback riding
* Fishing
* Hiking
* Kayaking
* Milburn Lake
* Bouchie Lake
* Bird Watching
* Pelicans
* Telegraph Trail
* Claymine Trail
* Snowshoeing
* Fire Fighting
* Farming / Gardening

If you have a photo you would like to share, please email it to blcountrystore@telus.net or pm it to the Bouchie Lake Country Store on Facebook.

Thank you.  :)

The Silver Spurtle Porridge Competition & ALL you can EAT Porridge - JANUARY 21st, 11 am

Rules are based upon The Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Champion that has been held in Carrbridge, Scotland since 1996.
http://www.goldenspurtle.com/competition/

As our Competition is not golden, our rules are a watered down version.

A copy of the rules can be viewed and /or downloaded here. An event listing has been c eated on Facebook.

The Silver Spurtle will be awarded to the competitor producing the best traditional porridge, made from oatmeal (pinhead / steel cut, course, medium or fine)l, oat flakes or rolled oats. The only other two ingredients are Water and Salt.  We will also award a Bronze Spurtle to second place and a Wooden Spurtle to THIRD Place.

Every competitor is required to produce at least 3 cups (750 ml.) of porridge so each judge will have a 1 cup portion to taste.  Presentation bowls will be provided for each competitor  so they can present their 3 porridge portions. The judges will be allowed to accompany the tasting with milk, cream, salt or brown sugar.
Judging of the porridge will be made on the methodology, trivia, consistency, taste and colour of the porridge. Click here to view scoring sheets.
Competitors, who prefer to ‘soak’ their oatmeal, may do so, but no prior cooking is allowed. All cooking must be done on-site.
All competitors must provide their favourite porridge pot, wooden spoon or
spurtle.  No equipment, other than a stove and a hotplate will be provided by the organisers. IF YOU HAVE A HOT PLATE, PLEASE BRING ONE. :)

Depending upon number of competitors, heats may be set up.  The organisers reserve the right to reserve number of entrants should the event be over-subscribed!!!!  Competitors will be notified of the acceptance of their entry.  All competitors must know that photographs will be taken, used on social media, and for promotion of future events.
Entry fees are due no later than 10:00 am on the morning of the competition and are
non-refundable.  All competitors will be given a Competitor’s # which will be kept confidential. The judges will only know competitor numbers rather than names of competitors.

We look forward to seeing you at the Silver Spurtle
Porridge Making Competition.

Ukulele JAM Session with Wallace and the Boukulele's

Join us for a 2 hour Jam Session with Wallace Jenks.

This will be first of, what we hope will be many, Jam Sessions.

Includes a coffee / tea and a slice of fresh bread or a biscuit and some JAM!

Pre-payment is required.  A Registration Form can be downloaded via this link.

Only $15.00 / person + GST.

An event page has been created on Facebook.

Here's is a Bio on Wallace:

Wallace moved to the North Cariboo from Houston, British Columbia and lives on the Quesnel Hydraulic Road. He grew up on bluegrass, started playing guitar but never got anywhere with it, traded his guitar for a bass guitar to the same avail.
He bought a uke while on a family vacation on Maui and was determined to learn to play it. He is mostly self taught through instructional videos and various books. He played with Betsy Van Halderan's group for a year. While playing with Betsy, they played a song written by Jenny Lester from Smithers whom he'd known since they were kids & it reminded him how much he really like bluegrass music.
Last summer, Wallace attended Nimblefingers in Sorrento. Nimblefingers is a bluegrass and oldtime music weeklong workshop and festival that brings in some of the best bluegrass musicians from all over North America to teach and perform. There was 5-6 hours of instruction every day, instructor performances every night and jamming everywhere until 2 or 3 in the morning.
